Over the course of the past fiveyears archaeologists from the Historic Environment Department of DCT Abu Dhabi haveidentified and recorded more than 50 separate aflaj (sing.falaj) in more than 150 different locations around AlAin, at depths of up to 15 metres below modern streetlevel.
The initial findings were made during aproject to install a deep stormwater drainage system in the old shaabiyaat housingareas around Hili Oasis (Falaj Al Mazmi, Eidan Al Mahabba,Misbah) in 2020. Since then, aflaj have been found duringhouse building and other projects in these areas.
DCT Abu Dhabi has carried out detailed investigations, sampling and 3-Ddocumentation at each falaj location, followed by protection and conservationmeasures to make sure they are preserved for future generations. Repairsto the brick vault in the manhole in Road 10 began in November 2020 andcontinued with work on the larger exposed section of falaj in Road 15 intoDecember 2020
