Abstract

Excavations in 2023 at the north-west edge of Muʿtariḍ Oasis revealed a multi-period landscape, including a monumental Umm an-Nār tomb (2600–2000 BC), an extensive Iron Age (1300–300 BC) field and irrigation system, and later Islamic structures such as walls, a fortified house or tower, and a mosque. The findings highlight the long-term development of Al Ain’s funerary, hydraulic, and agricultural landscapes. An agreement with the developer will preserve 3,000 m² of the site in situ, creating opportunities for future public presentation and engagement with DCT Abu Dhabi’s ongoing research.
