Secrets of the shaabiyat Recent developments in the archaeology of the (urban) oasis landscape of Al Ain

This paper summarizes archaeological investigations by DCT Abu Dhabi’s Historic Environment Department in Al Ain’s historic shaabiyat housing areas. It outlines the scope, opportunities, and methods of these works, highlighting examples from Falaj Al Mazmi and Kuwaitat. The findings provide important new insights into the development of Al Ain’s oasis landscape and inform its management within a modern urban setting.
