Over the course of the past fiveyears archaeologists from the Historic Environment Department of DCT Abu Dhabi haveidentified and recorded more than 50 separate aflaj (sing.falaj) in more than 150 different locations around AlAin, at depths of up to 15 metres below modern streetlevel.
The initial findings were made during aproject to install a deep stormwater drainage system in the old shaabiyaat housingareas around Hili Oasis (Falaj Al Mazmi, Eidan Al Mahabba,Misbah) in 2020. Since then, aflaj have been found duringhouse building and other projects in these areas.
DCT Abu Dhabi has carried out detailedinvestigations, sampling and 3-D documentation at each falaj location, followedby protection and conservation measures to make sure they are preserved forfuture generations. Future access to some of the most significant ofthese aflaj has been made possible by building manholes and accessshafts. Stones from the dismantled cover wereplaced back in the manhole prior to backfilling and laying of warning layer ofgeotextile
